Why We’re “Blacking Out Black Friday” This Year — And Shopping Within Our Community Instead

As we move through this season, there is so much to be grateful for. Life, community, creativity, and the blessings already in our hands. It’s easy to let the chaos of the world steal the joy we’re meant to feel—but this year, I’m challenging us to shift our mindset.

Let’s redefine Black Friday.

Instead of pouring our energy (and coins!) into big corporations, let’s shine a spotlight on POC-owned businesses, local makers, mom-and-pop shops, and small creative brands that truly keep our communities thriving. The truth is, Black Friday doesn’t hit like it used to anyway. Unless Kmart is coming back with those all-night lines and doorbuster deals, we’re good!

But honestly…
For many small businesses, this season is what carries us into the new year. And speaking from personal experience, there is nothing like the feeling of receiving an order—even just one. Every sale is encouragement. Every supporter reminds us why we keep going.

Look Around—Your Community Has What You Need

A phrase I’ve recently adopted is: “What you need is already in the room.”

Your circle is more connected than you think. Hidden inside your community are creators, professionals, faith-builders, service providers, makers, and small business owners who would love your support. Sometimes your next opportunity—or your next perfect Christmas gift—is only one or two connections away.

As you finish (or start—no judgment!) your holiday shopping, take time to seek out the local shops and small brands you can support. Even if you shop on Etsy, dig deeper. Look into the mission, story, and origin of the businesses you buy from. You’ll be surprised by the passion, purpose, and craftsmanship behind the work of local artisans.

So Here’s the Challenge…

This year, let’s Black Out Black Friday.
Let’s step away from the big-box hype and shop intentionally within our community.

Support the makers.
Support the dreamers.
Support the entrepreneurs building something meaningful.

Because when you shop small, you’re not just buying a product—you’re investing in purpose, creativity, and someone’s God-given vision.
